Director, Dr. Julie Lyn Barber is looking for community actors to audition for the Purdue University Fort Wayne production of the musical, Cabaret.
This is the 1998 version of the show, based on the 1993 Donmar Warehouse Revival. The show will be cast with 12-16 adult singer/actors of any age, gender, ethno-cultural heritage, religion or ability.
Please Note: This musical has undergone several re-inventions since its 1966 debut, including a Fosse film adaptation and a highly sexualized re-interpretation of the M.C. in the 1998 Broadway production. We will look to the script for the development of our own characters rather than replicate any previous actor’s from any particular production. Our Kit Kat Club is not a sex club. It is an underground party destination where everyone is welcome to embrace and celebrate their inner and outer artist, unicorn, weird-and-wonderfulness without shame or judgement. Any expression of sexuality in the club will be entirely consensual. It is the outside world that is dangerous: embracing oppression, engaging in othering and actual immorality and inhumanity. The denizens of the club will fight against that through artistic and personal expression as long as they can.
For Your Consideration:This show deals with the rise of the Nazi regime and some characters engage in anti-semitism. At least one character will wear a swastika armband in several scenes. The show also features romantic involvement between characters, which will include physical contact, kissing, and allusions to sexual activity. There are also two moments of physical violence. All intimacy and violence will be choreographed. Actors will be asked to share their level of comfort with specifics on the audition form as a starting point for a discussion.
