The Hot Jazz Preservation Society revives the tunes of the hot jazz era and beyond, from the 1890s to the 1940s including works by Hoagy Carmichael, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin. This family band has toured State Parks for the past 3 years and will add to its venues this summer with its homespun versions of old tunes on backyard instruments like the Washtub Bass and Wabash Washboard.

The Starr Gennett Story

August 01, 2020

This new play with music was slated to have its debut at the 2020 Indianapolis Theatre Fringe Festival. The Festival has been cancelled but the show will go on if possible in an alternate space. The initial workshop featured Monica Cantrell, James Solomon Benn and Julie Lyn Barber with Craig Hicks at the piano. The Starr Gennett Story is  a live-action stage play with music telling the story of the early years of the Starr Piano Company and Gennett Records.

Reviews

“Julie Lyn Barber is clearly a highly gifted artist. Indeed, her portrayal of various influential female leaders from history—including Cleopatra, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher, and Hillary herself—displays an extraordinary accent range as well as obvious singing prowess.” (2015 Nuvo, Indianapolis, IN)

"Ms. Barber’s musical narration was quite hypnotic which aided in my viewing of it. It was as if I were being hypnotized into sympathizing with the monster on stage.... the perfect atmosphere for a spooky good time. If you like steampunk — go! If you like Tim Burton — go! If you like haunted houses — oh my god, go!"(2013, WWW.MISSIONINTRIGUEINDY.COM)

“The Indiana Squirrel Stampede” at the Indy Eleven Theatre stars some very talented local artists and is laugh-out-loud funny — a sleeper hit and a must see.
